The UK's new immigration policy
:UK′s Points-Based Immigration System
After Brexit, the UK initiated a series of actions, including the implementation of a new immigration policy. The points-based immigration system introduced this time has been widely regarded by multiple media outlets as the largest immigration revolution officially announced by the UK since 1973.
The UK Home Office officially announced the launch of a new immigration policy on February 19, 2020
:(The UK's Points-Based Immigration System:70 Points)。
This is the first time the UK has introduced a new points-based immigration system, which will come into effect on January 1, 2021, and will be open to individuals worldwide. All individuals applying for a UK work visa must score a minimum of 70 points to be eligible.
Under this points-based immigration system, applicants will be scored based on specific skills, qualifications, salary, or occupations, and visas will only be granted to those who meet the required score. The points threshold will be carefully set to attract the talent needed by the UK. Skilled workers will need to meet a range of criteria, including specific skills and English language proficiency, in order to work in the UK. All applicants will be required to meet the 70-point requirement, and according to the recommendations of the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), the minimum salary threshold in the UK will be set at £25,600 per year.
The new points-based system will also raise the skills threshold for skilled workers. Those seeking to live and work in the UK will now need to reach an equivalent level through qualifying exams, as opposed to the current degree level requirement. This will provide greater flexibility and ensure UK businesses have access to a larger pool of skilled workers.
Consistent with the government's declaration, there will be no specific route for low-skilled workers. It is estimated that 70% of the existing EU workforce would not meet the requirements of the skilled worker route, which will help reduce overall numbers in the future.
Why was the new immigration policy introduced?
The UK Home Office stated that the implementation of this policy aims to end the free movement of people, regain control of the UK's borders, and restore public trust. However, until December 31, 2020, EU citizens residing in the UK can still apply for settled status through the EU Settlement Scheme until June 2021.
Moreover, this new immigration policy is based on specific messages put forward during the 2016 referendum and the 2019 general election. It is intended to end the UK's reliance on cheap, low-skilled labor and to enhance productivity, strengthen technological capabilities, and more. At the same time, it aims to lower the overall immigration levels in the UK, introduce stricter security measures, attract more talented individuals, and provide a better experience for everyone coming to the UK.
This policy is open to individuals worldwide and gives priority to those with high skills and exceptional talents, including scientists, engineers, scholars, and more.
Additionally, the UK has introduced the Global Talent Scheme, which is open to individuals worldwide and offers the Global Talent Visa. This means that highly skilled scientists and researchers can come to the UK even without a job offer. For more details about this visa, please refer to another article.
The UK Home Office issued a statement on February 19, 2020, regarding the new points-based immigration system policy. The statement included the following information:
Scope of the points-based system
Salary and skill thresholds for skilled workers
Pathways for high-skilled workers
Reduction in the overall number of low-skilled workers
Visa application process
Crossing the UK border
Engagement and expansion
Analysis of the points-based system by the Migration Advisory Committee
Key reminder from Ten Sheng: Applicants must achieve a total score of 70 points, with the first three criteria totaling 50 points being mandatory requirements, in order to apply for a work visa. It is not necessary to score in all criteria; as long as the total reaches 70 points, the application is eligible. Each criterion is not scored repeatedly.
Please refer to the table below for the scoring chart of the immigration points
:
In the image above, the three "No" indicators within the red box represent the mandatory requirements that must be fulfilled:
Having a job offer from an officially recognized sponsoring organization in the UK - 20 points
Possessing appropriate job skills - 20 points
Meeting certain English language proficiency requirements - 10 points
There are three requirements that must be met, with a total score of 50 points. In other words, by reaching this point, you have already obtained 50 points, and you only need 20 more points to meet the criteria
The translation of your sentence from Chinese to English is as follows: "All the 'Yes' options in the blue boxes below are additional scoring criteria that are not mandatory to meet. In other words, they can be combined and fulfilled in any way:
Annual salary £20,480-£23,039: 0 points
Annual salary £23,040-£25,599: 10 points
Annual salary £25,600 and above: 20 points
Shortage occupation (designated by the Migration Advisory Committee - MAC): 20 points
Education: Relevant doctoral degree: 10 points
Education: Doctoral degree in a STEM-related field: 20 points
Ten Cats Reminders:
STEM refers to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
The shortage occupation list will be compiled by MAC and will be announced at the appropriate time.
The standards for job skills will be based on the implementation of MAC's recommendations, lowering the skill threshold from RQF6 to RQF3
The translation of your paragraph from Chinese to English is as follows: "In other words, to achieve a salary of £25,600, you need to meet the requirement of 70 points. Alternatively, you can fulfill any other criteria as long as the total score adds up to 70 points.
For example, if you already have 50 points, you can fulfill the remaining 20 points by meeting any combination of the criteria in the blue boxes. The key is to reach a total score of 70 points, with 50 points being the mandatory score and the additional points from the subsequent criteria.
For instance, a university researcher working on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) projects wants to come to the UK, but their annual salary is only £22,000 (which is below the general minimum wage threshold). However, they can still enter the UK as long as they have a relevant doctoral degree in STEM. Similarly, if you are a nurse with a salary of only £2.2, you can still enter the UK because nursing is considered a shortage occupation, which is determined by MAC.
Key reminder from Ten Cats: Applicants must achieve a total score of 70 points, with the first three criteria totaling 50 points being mandatory to apply for a work visa. Any combination of scores that adds up to 70 points can qualify. Each criterion is not scored multiple times.
If you want to obtain a work visa in the UK, the summary from Ten Cats is: being sponsored, having skills, English proficiency, sufficient salary, high education level, and being in a profession with a shortage.
