What is a connecting ticket? What is through baggage check-in? A guide to connecting and non-connecting through baggage check-in.

If through baggage check-in is not available for the first segment, unless your second transit station allows checked baggage entry or agrees to handle the baggage, you may not be able to bring your baggage on board the aircraft, which poses a significant risk.

This must be clarified in advance with the airline of the first segment. Generally, if the second segment has only one connection, the first segment may not accept through check-in for two connections. Different subsequent airlines have different requirements and operations, depending on how the first segment airline handles the situation.

Recently, countless netizens have asked me the same question about through baggage check-in and the related issues of connecting and non-connecting flights. In fact, I have briefly mentioned this question in previous Weibo posts, but perhaps not in great detail. Therefore, Ten Cats has decided to write a separate article specifically addressing this issue of connecting and non-connecting flights, as well as through baggage check-in.

Ten Cats reminds you: This article is for reference only. Please refer to the official information provided by the airlines and airports at that time.

Guide to Connecting and Non-Connecting Flights and Through Baggage Check-In

First, let's talk about what a connecting flight is.

It refers to a ticket that includes a transit flight, and it must be purchased together, not separately. This means that you must directly purchase a ticket from location A to location C with a transit at location B from a certain ticket office. Location B is the transit area, and generally, it is a non-stop overnight transit (some airports have a time limit of within 24 hours, depending on the specific situation, subject to the airline and airport regulations). In other words, when you have a ticket that includes the A-B-C journey on a single itinerary, it is called a connecting ticket. It can also involve multiple transit locations, and in such cases, you can inquire with the airline about through baggage check-in.

A connecting ticket can be from the same airline, an alliance airline, or one that has signed a BIA (Behind and Beyond Interline Agreement) (more on what BIA is later). But it must be purchased together, and usually, all the segments of the journey will be on a single itinerary. You can also have all the boarding passes for the subsequent segments printed at the first segment (Ten Cats reminds you: Some international transit areas at airports do not have transfer counters or similar facilities, so it may not be possible to print boarding passes for subsequent segments, and some transit airports may not assist with rechecking baggage).

What is a non-connecting ticket?

A non-connecting ticket refers to individual tickets purchased separately. For example, if you first purchase a ticket from London to Paris and then another ticket from Paris to Shanghai, or if you purchase the first segment first and then the tickets for the subsequent segments separately, it means that the tickets were not purchased together but as separate segments. These individual tickets purchased separately are known as non-connecting tickets.

What is through baggage check-in?

Most airlines worldwide have a baggage interline agreement (BIA), which allows for through baggage check-in. This means that when you have a connecting ticket, you can check your baggage directly to your final destination. For example, on a London-Paris-Shanghai itinerary, you can check your baggage in London and not have to retrieve it in Paris. You can then collect your baggage upon arrival in Shanghai.

Here is a list of domestic airlines in China that have signed the BIA for through baggage check-in:

The two-letter codes used to abbreviate airline names are IATA codes, which are standardized codes developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for airlines, cities, and airports worldwide. IATA stands for the International Air Transport Association. Each airline is represented by a two-letter code. For example, the two-letter code for Air China is "CA."

Please note that the following image represents airline codes. For example, "CA" represents Air China, and "AA" represents the IATA code for American Airlines.

The image below shows the other global airlines that have a baggage interline agreement with Air China, and the letters represent the two-letter codes for each airline
