Is it possible to use domestic surveillance cameras in the UK when installing home security cameras?
Reminder: If you don't want to purchase surveillance services or install your own cameras in the UK, you can consider buying alarm systems to attach to your doors and windows. When we were in the UK, the police gave us a few for free. Alternatively, you can also consider purchasing infrared motion sensors, which work well.
Due to the current special circumstances, some parents are interested in buying surveillance cameras for their children to use in the UK. They reached out to TenShengMiao privately to inquire whether domestic cameras can be used abroad. TenShengMiao, who rented a property in the UK, has not personally used home surveillance cameras before. Apart from cameras in schools, apartments, and shopping malls, they are encountering this issue for the first time. So, can surveillance cameras purchased in China be used in the UK?
TenShengMiao's response: Home surveillance cameras purchased in China come in different versions. The domestic versions cannot be used overseas, but some international versions can be used.
TenShengMiao advises: Not every country allows direct installation of surveillance cameras, and some countries require a license for installing such cameras. Currently, there is no mandatory restriction on installing home surveillance cameras in the UK, but they must be used within appropriate boundaries and must not infringe upon others' privacy.
TenShengMiao suggests: There is no need to bring surveillance cameras from China to the UK. In the UK, you can easily purchase surveillance equipment from physical stores or online platforms. They are convenient, readily available, and not very expensive. If you choose a paid surveillance service company, you don't even need to buy the equipment separately; the company will take care of everything.
Generally, most main streets, schools, student accommodations, shopping malls, and other areas in the UK have surveillance cameras. However, compared to China, the number of surveillance cameras in the UK is relatively low, especially in schools located in slightly remote towns or villages. They usually have minimal surveillance coverage. If you are renting a property on your own, whether it is a detached house or a townhouse, there is typically no surveillance. As for apartments, it depends on the type of apartment. Some apartments may only have cameras at the main entrance, while corridors and other areas might not have them.
Therefore, if you live in a detached house, townhouse, or if you want to install home surveillance cameras on your own, how can you do it in the UK?
In the UK, there are generally two types of home surveillance systems:
CCTV Surveillance Companies:
This type involves purchasing services from a surveillance company. You buy the services provided by the company, and they install the surveillance system for you, along with offering related services, including emergency response. This service is paid for annually, and there are many surveillance service companies in the UK, each with different prices and offerings.
The advantage of this type is that the surveillance company takes care of the installation, monitoring, and subsequent maintenance and upgrades of the surveillance system. They handle all aspects related to the surveillance system, including repairs and upgrades.

elf-installation of surveillance cameras:
This involves purchasing the surveillance equipment yourself, installing it, testing it, and then monitoring the camera interface on your own.
Currently, most surveillance systems are wireless and high-definition. Wireless systems are more convenient than wired ones, and when considering the overall cost, they are cheaper than the services provided by surveillance companies. With self-installation, you only need to make a one-time payment, and there are usually no additional fees afterward. That's why most people choose to install their own surveillance systems.
If you decide to purchase surveillance cameras on your own, here are some general recommendations:
Opt for high-definition cameras, preferably 1080p resolution, with a minimum of 720p.
Choose wireless cameras for convenience and to avoid the need for wiring.
Look for cameras with night vision capability, as this feature is crucial.
Consider cameras with a narrower field of view. It is suggested to select cameras with adjustable angles or a 130-degree wide-angle view for areas such as doors, garages, and gardens. This angle choice ensures that the displayed objects and people appear normal without distortion. Additionally, you can install a wide-angle, 360-degree rotating camera in less noticeable areas as an additional security measure.
The number of cameras depends on the specifics of your house. For example, in a townhouse, you may only need three cameras—one for each face of the house. However, you can install additional cameras, such as three larger ones outside and a few smaller ones on side or interior walls facing outward.
Consider the storage options. Each surveillance system is different, with some offering cloud storage (both paid and free) and others using memory cards. Choose based on your specific needs and preferences. Some systems allow monthly clearing or flexible storage management. If possible, it is recommended not to clear the recordings during your study abroad period and perform the cleanup after returning to your home country. However, this may incur additional costs. If that is not feasible, you can extend the duration before clearing the recorded footage.
Purchase cameras from reputable brands with good reviews.
Set strong passwords and regularly change them for added security.

Installation: Installing home surveillance cameras in the UK requires permission from the landlord or letting agent, especially if you are renting a property rather than owning it. Since surveillance cameras require power and wiring, including drilling holes to secure them on walls or ceilings, it is necessary to inform the letting agent or landlord and obtain their consent. Additionally, it is important to clarify in advance that you will restore the property to its original condition or any other agreed-upon arrangement after the tenancy.
Surveillance cameras come in both wired and battery-powered versions. For wired cameras, if there are not enough electrical outlets in the house, additional wiring work is required, which involves hiring professionals for installation. The cost of professional installation can be quite expensive. However, if you are capable, you can perform the installation yourself. Battery-powered cameras do not require wiring, but they have their limitations. Nevertheless, having a battery-powered camera as a backup can provide additional security in case of a power outage.
Two-Way Communication Function: This feature may not be necessary for outdoor cameras but can be considered for indoor cameras, depending on individual needs.
Remote App Control: This feature depends on personal requirements. Nowadays, many surveillance cameras come with dedicated apps for remote control and monitoring.
Waterproof and Weatherproof: Even if the camera is installed under a canopy or overhang, it is important to consider its waterproof and weatherproof capabilities. In the UK, rain can be frequent and prolonged, often accompanied by strong winds from various directions.
As for specific camera recommendations, it is currently suggested to refer to rankings and reviews on platforms like Google and Amazon. This is because the choice of camera depends on individual preferences and requirements.
