What items are prohibited from being carried by UK customs upon entry?

Reminder: The prohibited and restricted items for entry by customs may change, so it is important to stay updated on official announcements and rely on official information.

The UK strictly prohibits the carrying of drugs, internationally banned items, protected animal and plant products, controlled drugs, obscene materials, counterfeit and pirated products, imitation firearms, ammunition, or explosives. The UK customs strictly prohibits the entry of products made from endangered animals. Therefore, when packing your luggage, please ensure not to carry food, plants, or medications made from endangered animals. Specific list of prohibited items includes:

· Fresh, dehydrated, or canned meat, meat products, and dairy products

· Plant seeds, vegetables, honey, fruits, and soil

· Insects and other plant-harming pests

· Fish and fish roe

· Wildlife and specimens

· Drugs and dangerous pharmaceuticals

· Counterfeit and illegally reproduced items infringing patents

· Lottery tickets

· Firearms, light weapons, explosives, and ammunition, including electronic detonators and gas canisters

· Offensive weapons such as spring-loaded knives, knuckle dusters, etc.

· Items with obscene and threatening content, including books, magazines, CDs, video tapes

· Precious cultural relics and other items prohibited from leaving the country

· Counterfeit currency or securities

And so on.

Reminder: Pet animals (such as dogs, cats, and ferrets) can only be brought into the UK under specific conditions. If they do not meet the requirements of the pet travel scheme, their entry into the UK may be refused.

If animals that do not meet the requirements of the pet travel scheme are discovered upon arrival in the UK, they may be subject to trade standards (illegal entry) or obtain permits from the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) (application submitted before travel) and be quarantined. In the case of non-EU pet birds, they may enter the UK only through designated ports authorized and inspected by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA). Endangered plants and animals are restricted from entering the UK, including live endangered animals, birds, and plants, or products made from them, such as jewelry, shoes, handbags, and belts, even if they are openly sold in the country of purchase unless you hold a valid CITES permit. This also includes caviar, ivory, coral, shells, and items made from endangered animals such as alligator, caiman, and snake skin.

Prohibited Items List by UK Customs

For the following items, if found upon entry, UK Customs will confiscate them and determine the legal responsibilities of the carrier based on the specific circumstances:

Controlled drugs

Books, magazines, videos, etc., containing obscene and indecent content

Meat and dairy products attempted to be carried into the UK from most non-EU countries

Carrying Regulations for Meat and Dairy Products

If you are traveling from China to the UK, in most cases, you will be considered a non-EU arrival. Therefore, when entering the UK, it is important to comply with the regulations regarding the carrying of meat and dairy products for non-EU arrivals:

The following items are prohibited to carry:

Meat and meat products

Milk and dairy products (except for baby food, infant formula, pet food, and special food prepared for patients with specific medical needs)

The following items are allowed to carry up to two kilograms per person:

Baby food, infant formula, pet food, and special food prepared for patients with specific medical needs (these foods must be non-perishable) while ensuring they are in the original manufacturer's sealed packaging (excluding those currently being consumed)

Carrying Regulations for Vegetables and Fruits

Long flights require replenishing vitamins, and eating fruits is the best choice. However, when entering the UK, it is important to comply with the regulations regarding the carrying of vegetables and fruits for non-EU arrivals:

Except for the following types, any other type of vegetables and fruits is prohibited from being carried into the UK:

Pineapple

Kiwi

Coconut

Citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits

Kumquat

Persimmon

Durian

Curry leaves

Bananas

Mangoes

Dates

Passion fruit

Guava

Processed plant products, such as bagged salads or frozen plant products

Peeled nuts or nut oils

Specific grain products, including rice

If you are carrying endangered plant or animal products or food items into the UK, you must apply for a CITES certificate in advance.

Regulations on Carrying Tobacco and Alcohol Products into the UK

Individuals under the age of 17 are prohibited from carrying any tobacco and alcohol products. For adults, they can carry a limited amount of tobacco and alcohol products for personal use, but they must complete customs declaration before entry.

 


 

Regulations on Carrying Medications by UK Customs upon Entry

For medications that need to be carried, we recommend consulting with a doctor or pharmacist in advance to confirm if they contain controlled substances. Additionally, to ensure a smooth entry, we advise checking the list of controlled drug ingredients on the official website of the UK government.

If it is necessary to carry medications containing controlled substances into the country, one of the following proofs must be provided:

Prescription Certification Letter - The letter must be issued by the prescribing doctor and include the following information:

Name

Travel destination and duration

Names and dosages of the prescribed medications

Doctor's signature

If staying in the UK for more than three months or carrying medications for a three-month supply, a Personal Medication License must be obtained.

Application process for Personal Medication License:

The application must be submitted at least 15 working days prior to arrival in the UK.

 


The application should be sent via email to

The email should include the explanation of the purpose of travel to the UK, travel information, and the address in the UK.

It should also provide detailed information and dosage of the medications, along with the prescription certification letter issued by the doctor.

Regulations on the total value of personal belongings carried upon entry by UK customs:

Travelers entering the UK are allowed to carry items with a total value of £390 or less per person.

If entering the UK with £10,000 or more in cash, it must be declared.
