How much does it cost to study in the UK?
Foundation, undergraduate, postgraduate, language programs, boarding schools, A-levels
The cost of studying in the UK varies depending on several factors such as exchange rates, tuition fees, cost of living, location, type of program, duration, and the student's personal lifestyle choices. Let me briefly explain the costs associated with common types of study in the UK, including foundation programs, undergraduate degrees, postgraduate degrees, boarding schools, and A-levels.
Please note: The costs mentioned here are based on information as of September 2022 and are subject to change.
According to the UK Home Office regulations for student visa applications, students living in London are required to have a minimum of £1,334 per month for living expenses, while those living outside London need at least £1,023 per month.

UK Foundation Programs
Foundation programs in the UK are divided into undergraduate foundation and postgraduate foundation. The tuition fees for foundation programs vary depending on the program offered by each foundation group or university. The prices generally range from a few thousand pounds to tens of thousands of pounds, depending on the specific circumstances of the student. Foundation programs typically span 1-4 semesters, meaning that some international students may apply for a 3-month program, while others may need to study for 1 or 2 years, or even longer, resulting in different tuition fees. Therefore, the estimated price range is around £12,000 to £30,000.

UK Undergraduate Programs
Undergraduate programs in the UK have varying durations depending on the region. In England, undergraduate programs typically last for 3 years, while in Scotland, they generally span 4 years. Programs such as Medicine usually take 5-7 years to complete. The tuition fees for undergraduate programs at UK universities may vary each year. Some universities increase their fees by around £1,000 per year, while others keep them unchanged for several years. It primarily depends on the university and the specific circumstances. As a rough estimate, undergraduate tuition fees in the UK can range from around £12,000 to £50,000.
Please note that tuition fees differ for each university. The screenshot below displays the fee structure for a specific major at the University of Warwick in the UK.

UK Master's Programs
The tuition fees for Master's programs in the UK vary depending on the specific university. For example, taught programs usually have a duration of 1 year (although there are also 2-year programs, depending on the field of study). Research-based programs typically last for 2 years, while diploma programs usually span 9 months. MBA programs generally take 1-2 years to complete. Tuition fees can change each year, with some universities increasing fees annually and others maintaining them at the same level. It's worth noting that if you have completed your undergraduate degree at a particular UK university and continue to pursue your Master's or Ph.D. at the same university, you may be eligible for partial tuition fee scholarships.

UK Accommodation Costs
Accommodation costs in the UK can vary across different types, such as renting a house, apartment, or townhouse, or living in university-owned student apartments or private student apartments. Generally, student apartments are the most expensive option, followed by university-owned student apartments, privately rented apartments, and townhouses. However, prices can also differ based on factors such as location, environment, and the landlord, which determine the specific rental price of a property.
Some of my friends have experienced situations where they were charged inflated rent prices by sub-landlords. For instance, they initially rented a townhouse for £800 per month, but the sub-landlord (who happened to be a senior student at their university) charged them £1,500. Due to their initial trust in the senior student they knew from back home, they decided to rent the house from them. However, after the lease expired, my friends found another property from a local individual for a few hundred pounds per month and have been living there ever since.
The screenshot below provides an example of the prices for Therese House, a student apartment in London. Different room types have varying prices, such as £311 per week for Classic En Suite, £350 per week for Standard Studio, and £439 per week for Deluxe Studio.

So, rental prices vary in each city in the UK. Apart from the publicly listed prices for student apartments, there are also different rental prices offered by external agencies, individual landlords, sub-landlords, and others. I recommend trying to find rentals from highly rated or reliable local individuals or trustworthy teachers.
Living expenses in the UK vary depending on individual student spending habits. Some students may spend a few thousand or tens of thousands of pounds per year, while others may spend hundreds of thousands of pounds. It largely depends on their everyday consumption choices, such as cooking at home or eating out, purchasing luxury items or not, opting for budget travel or luxurious five-star hotel trips, and so on.
For example, one of my friends maintains a habit of cooking meals for himself every day, and his monthly living expenses amount to only £300, sometimes even less. Despite that, he is still able to enjoy his time in the UK, visit other small cities, and he mentioned that he came to the UK solely for studying and doesn't work part-time. Over the course of a year, his total living expenses, including rent, utilities, and other costs, add up to around £3,000-£4,000. It can be said that he manages to live comfortably while spending less than the UK government's recommended minimum monthly budget of £1,023. He is truly impressive in terms of being economical, and he even gained weight, indicating a good quality of life.
I also mentioned a friend in a previous instance who pays only £200-£300 in monthly rent. He is also very thrifty and doesn't work part-time. His annual expenses amount to less than £5,000, which is significantly low. However, compared to the previous friend, he doesn't have as indulgent a lifestyle. This friend doesn't travel, rarely buys new clothes, spends most of his time in the library, often buys food from the £1 store, brings packed lunches, or occasionally relies on others for meals.
The screenshot below provides an estimation of the cost of living for studying at the University of Warwick in the UK, including expenses for food, cosmetics, books, materials, clothing, telephone, laundry, insurance, travel, entertainment, and others. Apart from tuition fees and accommodation costs, the estimated annual expenditure at the University of Warwick is approximately £6,345, excluding utilities and other utility bills.
:
To summarize, the approximate cost of studying in the UK for a preparatory course, undergraduate degree, or master's degree is over 200,000 RMB per year. For programs that exceed one year, such as undergraduate, preparatory, or master's degrees, the tuition fees remain the same, but the living expenses and rent need to be added accordingly.
English Language Studies
If you plan to study English in the UK, you will need to budget for additional language tuition fees, as well as accommodation and living expenses during your language studies. Each university offers different language courses with varying prices.
The screenshot below displays the language course details at the University of Coventry in the UK. There are options for 5-week and 10-week courses, with the price for a 10-week course in 2020 being £3,800, and £1,900 for a 5-week course.

Boarding Schools in the UK
Generally, the tuition fees for boarding schools in the UK include accommodation, meals, and basic tuition fees. Each school varies, but most boarding schools have three terms in a year, with tuition fees ranging approximately from £12,000 to £50,000.
For example, on September 6, 2022, Li Xiang's daughter, Wang Shiling, enrolled in Benenden School, one of the best girls' schools in the UK, founded in 1923. The school even arranged for Wang Shiling to stay in the room where Princess Anne resided in that year. The tuition fee for each term at the school is approximately £9,350. There are three terms in a year, starting in September, January, and April. The school is a private boarding secondary school located in Kent, England.
UK A-levels (General Certificate of Education Advanced Level)
This is similar to high school in China and generally lasts for two years. The tuition fees for UK A-levels range from approximately £4,000 to £10,000.
Summary: Apart from the fixed tuition fees, accommodation fees and living expenses can be determined by individuals. You can choose accommodation fees that are relatively suitable for your budget, and you have the flexibility to decide how to manage your living expenses. Ultimately, the total cost for a one-year master's degree is approximately 200,000 to 300,000 RMB
