How to renew a student visa in the UK?
To renew a student visa in the UK, the process can now be primarily done online within the country, eliminating the need to visit a visa center. You only need to download an app called "UK Immigration: ID Check" [https://www.gov.uk/guidance/using-the-uk-immigration-id-check-app\]. This app is in English, so it's recommended to prepare an Android phone in advance for downloading. By preparing the necessary documents in advance, you can typically complete the entire process online and wait for the new Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) to arrive. In case of any exceptional circumstances, you will receive a notification via email.
Reminder: The online renewal process is generally applicable if you already have a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) since not having a BRP would require offline fingerprinting and photography.
Reminder: You need to be within the UK during the renewal period and avoid traveling outside the country.
Reminder: After receiving the new BRP, make sure to check the accompanying letter for instructions on whether you need to cut and return the old BRP. The new BRP will have a different number.
Reminder: The UK will abolish BRPs starting from January 1, 2025, making future renewals simpler.
Reminder: If you have changed schools or addresses and obtained a new visa, remember to update your GP (General Practitioner) accordingly.
What documents are required?
Valid passport
iPhone and Android phone (If iPhone cannot read BRP, it is recommended to use Android as scanning BRP on iPhone sometimes fails)
Download the "UK Immigration: ID Check" app in advance on your phone. Search for it in the application store.
Biometric Residence Permit (BRP). You will need to scan the BRP using the ID Check app downloaded on your phone.
New CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). The CAS should have a start date that is within 28 days before the expiration date on the BRP. If it exceeds this period, you will need to apply for an Exceptional Assurance (EA) to extend your stay. During the EA period, you cannot renew your visa.
Note: CAS stands for Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. It is provided by the educational institution and contains a reference number (the most important part). Once you have met the language requirements or fulfilled the school's criteria, they will issue a new CAS for you.
Documents used during the CAS application process (e.g., original and translated copies of graduation certificates, degree certificates, academic transcripts from your previous institution, IELTS or language test results, etc.). These will be required for uploading.
Financial proof: While there is generally no mandatory requirement, visa officers may randomly check this. It is recommended to prepare bank statements with sufficient funds in advance for the visa renewal. The financial proof should demonstrate that you have enough money to cover your tuition fees and living expenses. The funds should be deposited in the bank account at least 28 days prior to applying for the visa (regardless of whether the money is in a Current Account or a Saving Account). It should not be deposited within the last 28 days.
If the financial proof is in your parents' name, you will need to provide:
Proof of your relationship, such as a birth certificate or notarized document.
A letter from your parents stating that they allow you to use their bank statements (Letter of main applicant's parent, giving permission to use their funds). If the letter is in Chinese, it should be translated into English by an officially recognized and reputable translation agency. Self-translation is not allowed.
Considering the short duration of a 5-week language course, it is recommended that students attending a 5-week language course in the UK deposit the required funds in accordance with the requirements in their home country in advance, in preparation for the visa renewal after the completion of the language course.
How to apply for a visa extension?
Click on the online application link: https://www.gov.uk/student-visa/extend-your-visa ↗ and click on 'start now'. Answer the selection questions in order.
Proceed to the 'Create a UK Visas and Immigration account' page and either create an account or log in directly.
Complete each step on the page, including 'identity and contact', 'prepare application', 'pay and submit application', and 'provide evidence'.
Once completed, you can wait for the result, which will be sent to you via email.
Afterward, you will receive a TNT courier mail to schedule the delivery of your BRP (Biometric Residence Permit). The delivery address will be the one you provided on the website. It is recommended to wait at the front door throughout the scheduled delivery day (In the UK, courier companies do not usually contact you in advance or specify a specific time for delivery. They may lightly knock on the door or say something softly to indicate the presence of a delivery. If there is no response, they will leave. The delivery can happen at any time during the day, so you should be at home and ready to receive it. In some cases, student apartments may have a reception that can accept the delivery, but not all do. For students living in non-reception apartments or houses, such as those on higher floors, it is advisable to wait at the entrance of the building throughout the day. Do not wait upstairs, as you may miss the delivery. If you miss the delivery, you will receive a mail indicating the failed delivery and asking you to reschedule).
If you do not have a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), you will need to visit the visa center in person. Fill out the application form online, then print it out and send it along with the prepared documents to the visa center by mail or scan and submit them online. After submitting the visa application, you will receive an email instructing you to go to a designated location for fingerprinting and photography.
For students requiring an in-person appointment (face-to-face interview), after completing the online application form, you need to schedule an appointment for the interview and bring the prepared visa documents to the visa center. This service allows you to receive the visa decision on the same day, but additional fees will be required in addition to the original application fee.
Visa processing times and fees can change at any time, so it is best to refer to the official website. Generally, the processing time is around 8 weeks, while expedited processing can provide results within a few days.
