What rental websites are available in the UK?

Zoopla, Prime Location, SpareRoom, Rightmove, Gumtree, OpenRent.

Zoopla:

It has a relatively large number of listings, but there is a higher probability of encountering scams or other issues. Be cautious about the potential risks.

Gumtree:

It is similar to classified websites like 58.com or Ganji.com in China. Although you can directly contact landlords, there are more short-term rentals available. However, it is important to be mindful of your privacy, safety, and financial security. It is generally not recommended due to higher risks, especially for female tenants who should avoid viewing properties alone.

SpareRoom:

This platform offers a significant number of shared accommodation listings, and it is popular among students. I personally found accommodation through SpareRoom and viewed several properties. Eventually, I chose to share a place with people from different countries. However, it is important to have a companion and prioritize safety. There is still a possibility of encountering scams or other risks.

Rightmove:

One of my classmates found a whole property to rent through Rightmove. Rightmove is the largest real estate website in the UK, and many agents also list their properties there. Zoopla is the second-largest real estate website in the UK, and Prime Location is a part of Zoopla. Prime Location mainly focuses on high-end properties in desirable locations. Some rental listings that are not available on other websites may be found on Prime Location. However, regardless of the website's popularity or ranking, it is crucial to prioritize personal safety and be aware of potential risks when searching for properties online.

OpenRent:

Safety should also be considered on this platform. There is still a relatively higher risk since it involves direct rentals from landlords. It is possible to encounter scammers or other issues, so luck plays a role as well.

Before renting a property, remember to visit and view it in person. Prepare a list of questions to ask the landlord, and pay close attention to important aspects during the viewing. If you are still in your home country, consider asking friends, alumni, or teachers who are willing to assist you. Afterward, be sure to express your gratitude by treating them to a meal or presenting a small gift. Property viewings can be tiring, and they require a significant amount of time and effort from others. Show your appreciation through action.

When dealing with agents, make sure to clarify the issues of booking deposit, security deposit, and holding deposit. In England and Wales, regardless of whether it is a rental agency or an individual landlord, the received deposit must be submitted to a deposit protection scheme.

Additionally, it is important to inquire about utility bills and create a comprehensive checklist. If you are opting for a shared accommodation, find reliable roommates who can ensure that rent is paid in advance. Therefore, it is generally advisable to avoid signing a joint tenancy agreement. Dealing with unreliable roommates who bring long-term guests or pets, lack cleanliness, engage in unethical behavior, wish to move out midway, or privately sublet to unreliable individuals can be extremely troublesome and frustrating.
