How to apply for a pre-university course in the UK?

What is a pre-university course?

A pre-university course, also known as a bridging course or foundation course, is a preparatory program offered by foreign universities. It is designed to bridge the gap between your previous education and the formal undergraduate or master's degree program. The course includes language training and academic subjects. The duration of a pre-university course can range from a few months to one or two years, depending on your specific field of study or academic background. In general, most students who go to the UK opt for a one-year pre-university course, known as the University Foundation Year. Pre-university courses are available for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

Almost all UK universities, except those in Scotland (as Scotland follows a four-year undergraduate program), require international students who plan to pursue an undergraduate degree to complete a one-year pre-university course. This requirement particularly applies to students who have completed their high school education (grade 12) or equivalent, or students with a diploma from a vocational school. However, specific requirements may vary depending on the chosen field of study and the university. Since 2019, several UK universities, including the University of Cambridge and the University of Birmingham, have started accepting direct admission to undergraduate programs based on the Chinese National College Entrance Examination (Gaokao) scores.

The same applies to postgraduate studies. In other words, you need to complete a pre-university course before you can pursue an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in the UK. However, a pre-university course is not mandatory if your academic background meets the requirements. Pre-university courses are offered by universities themselves (such as the University of Warwick and University College London) or by pre-university groups. Pre-university groups offer both one-on-one programs, where UK universities directly collaborate with the pre-university group, and one-to-many programs, where the pre-university course results can be used to apply to multiple UK universities. Some well-known pre-university groups in the UK include CEG, INTO, KAPLAN, and STUDY GROUP.

Please note that completing a pre-university course does not necessarily mean you have to attend the specific UK university you initially intended to. Based on your performance and achievements during the pre-university course, you can apply to higher-ranked universities. For example, if you completed a pre-university course at the University of Sheffield and achieved excellent grades with notable achievements, you can apply to higher-ranked universities. However, this is subject to the recognition of the pre-university course results by the target university. On the other hand, if you do not meet the requirements or fail to achieve satisfactory grades in the pre-university course, you may not be able to proceed to the regular degree program.

Which students need to study a pre-university course?

  1. Students who have completed the equivalent of grade 11 (junior      year) and have taken the required national examinations.

  2. Students who have completed grade 12 (senior year) and have      achieved the necessary scores in the national college entrance examination      (e.g., Gaokao) that meet the requirements of certain universities,      allowing them to skip the pre-university course.

  3. Students with a diploma from a vocational school.

  4. Students applying for specific degree programs with special      requirements, such as medicine or engineering.

  5. Students whose language proficiency or academic background does      not meet the university's requirements.

  6. Students aiming to apply to higher-ranking UK universities,      such as those within the top 10 or the G5 universities.

How to apply for a pre-university course?

First, choose your desired university and program. Then, prepare the following documents:

  • Personal statement

  • Proof of current enrollment (or graduation certificate if      already completed)

  • School transcripts

  • Letter of recommendation

  • IELTS scores

  • Passport (if available, or any previous UK study visas)

  • Portfolio for art-related programs

  • Additional supporting documents such as certificates of      achievement or internship certificates (if applicable)

Once you have prepared the required documents, you can apply directly on the official website of the university offering the pre-university course or through pre-university groups. Where is the best place to study a pre-university course? Pre-university courses are available both in the UK and in other countries. In China, most pre-university courses are offered in collaboration with local educational institutions and pre-university groups. However, it is recommended to study the pre-university course in the UK, preferably at a university that offers its own pre-university program.
