How to apply for UK Permanent Residence (PR)? (202209QA)

UK Permanent Residence Updates

  1. Children born in the UK and who have lived in the UK for a      minimum of 7 years can directly apply for Permanent Residence.

  2. To apply for Permanent Residence, applicants must pass an      English language test, except in certain special circumstances such as      refugee status.

  3. Except for minors and individuals who have obtained formal      refugee status, all individuals who entered the UK illegally must live in      the UK continuously and legally for 10 years before they can apply for UK      Permanent Residence.

What is UK Permanent Residence?

UK Permanent Residence, also known as Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), refers to the status of permanent residency in the United Kingdom. It is commonly referred to as "Permanent Residence" or "PR," similar to what is colloquially known as a "green card" in other countries.

Obtaining UK Permanent Residence means that you are allowed to reside permanently in the UK without the need to apply for any other UK visas. It grants various benefits, such as the ability to study, work, travel, conduct business, access UK welfare benefits, and enter the UK at any time. After holding Permanent Residence for one year, you can apply for British citizenship, with the condition that your time spent outside the UK during that year does not exceed 90 days.

How to apply for UK Permanent Residence? There are several ways to do so, such as through the Tier 2 work route, which requires 5 years of continuous employment in the UK. Another option is through the Entrepreneur route, which requires 5 years of running a business (Ten Up Meow has already provided guides for two entrepreneur visas, the Start-up Visa and Innovator Visa). Additionally, you can apply for Permanent Residence by residing in the UK for 10 years or through other available routes.

Official specific information about Long Residence and the application link can be found at the following links:

If you have legally resided in the UK continuously for 10 years (referred to as "Long Residence"), you can apply for settlement in the UK, known as indefinite leave to remain (ILR) or permanent residence (PR). This means that you can stay in the UK without any time restrictions. However, please note that there are limitations on the duration of individual trips outside the UK, where a single absence should not exceed 180 days, and the cumulative absences should not exceed 540 days within the 10-year period.

It is important to note that the rights and status of EU citizens currently residing in the UK will not change if they were already living in the UK on or before June 30, 2021, or December 31, 2020. In the event that the UK leaves the EU without an agreement (i.e., a no-deal Brexit), there may be provisions for EU immigration schemes to continue living in the UK.
