How to pay tuition fees at the University of Warwick?

A brief reminder: There is currently a foreign exchange limit of $50,000 imposed by the government, but this limit does not apply to international students. This means that the living expenses and tuition fees of international students are not subject to the $50,000 limit.

According to the regulations of the central bank, tuition fees and living expenses of international students are not subject to the $50,000 annual foreign exchange purchase limit. Overseas students can directly purchase the necessary foreign exchange at banks with materials such as the admission notice and tuition fee payment receipt, or they can use payment institutions to purchase foreign exchange and make payments abroad. This fully meets the needs of studying abroad and is not subject to the annual foreign exchange purchase limit.

In addition, some international students may have concerns about cash withdrawal limits abroad. According to foreign exchange management regulations, individuals holding domestic bank cards are not allowed to withdraw more than the equivalent of 100,000 RMB in cash per person per year overseas. If the annual limit is exceeded, the individual's domestic bank card will be suspended from cash withdrawals overseas for the current year and the following year. The daily withdrawal limit for cash withdrawals abroad using domestic bank cards in both RMB and foreign currencies is unified at the equivalent of 10,000 RMB. If an individual exceeds the annual limit for cash withdrawals overseas using a domestic bank card, they will be included in the list of suspended cash withdrawals overseas for the current year and the following year, and may even face penalties.

However, it's important to note that these regulations do not affect regular personal card spending overseas. Therefore, international students do not need to worry about the foreign exchange limit or issues related to using cards abroad.

Paying the tuition deposit is one of the necessary conditions for the university to issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). After meeting all the conditions stated in the Offer Letter except for paying the tuition deposit (For students who are directly admitted to the main course, the only remaining condition on the Offer is paying the tuition deposit; for students taking a language course followed by the main course, the Offer only has two remaining conditions: completing the pre-sessional language course and paying the tuition fee), students can proceed to pay the tuition fee. Students need to fulfill all the conditions specified in the Offer Letter and pay the tuition deposit in order to apply for a CAS.

Firstly, after receiving an offer, international students at the University of Warwick, which includes all study abroad students, need to pay a deposit. The purpose of this deposit is to secure a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS Letter) from the university, which is required to apply for a student visa in the UK.

A quick reminder: If you decide not to attend the university after paying the deposit, it is non-refundable. Essentially, the deposit serves as a placeholder fee to ensure your commitment to the university and to reserve the CAS spot for you. Even if you ultimately decide not to study abroad, this fee will not be refunded. There are only a few circumstances in which the deposit can be refunded: 1) If your visa application is rejected, meaning your application for a visa using the university's CAS is denied, you can apply for a refund based on this reason, but the process may take some time. 2) Personal reasons within your family, such as severe health issues or family accidents. 3) If you do not meet the admission requirements, such as failing to achieve the required IELTS score or having a low average score. In these cases, appropriate documentation will be required.

Typically, the deposit amount is one-third of the tuition fee. After you enroll, it will automatically be deducted from your course fee. For example, if your tuition fee is £9,000 and you pay a deposit of £3,000, your final tuition fee will be £9,000 minus £3,000. Here's an important reminder: If you are transferring the tuition fee from a bank in China or any other location, it's advisable to include a little extra to cover transaction fees. Otherwise, even if there is a difference of £1, your tuition fee will be considered unpaid. Transaction fees are charged by both banks involved, and typically, Chinese banks require you to pay the fee directly. However, the UK bank may not have included any transaction fees, so it's necessary to include an additional amount to cover these fees. The transaction fee generally ranges from £10 to £30, depending on the bank.

Don't worry about overpaying the tuition fee to the university. If you accidentally transfer an excess amount, you can apply for a refund at the student center. Your tuition fee can be viewed on the student homepage after you register and obtain your student ID.

When should the tuition fees at the University of Warwick be paid?

Here, Ten Sheng Meow would like to remind you that you can also choose to pay the tuition fees in full at once, which is more convenient.

  1. Deposit: It is generally recommended to pay the deposit at      least three months before your course starts. This is because you will      also need to arrange accommodation, apply for a visa, and consider the      efficiency during the peak period and various issues that may arise during      the application process. Therefore, early payment is necessary.

  2. Language Course Fees: The language course fees are required to      be paid in full when obtaining the CAS letter, before the start of the      course. It is not possible to pay them in installments.

  3. Main Course Fees: Before the start of the semester and the      university registration, you must pay 66% of the total tuition fee in      full. If you do not have any evidence or proof of payment for the 66% of      the tuition fee, you will not be able to register. Being unable to      register means you are not officially enrolled as a student and cannot      attend classes. That's why Ten Sheng Meow mentioned earlier that it is      advisable to pay the tuition fees in full at once.

What are the payment methods for tuition fees at the University of Warwick?

Bank Transfer Payment:

Most international students, including Ten Sheng Meow, use this traditional method of payment. It feels more secure to personally go to the bank and transfer the payment to the university. After transferring the deposit to the university, Ten Sheng Meow went to the UK and opened a UK bank account. Then, the tuition fees were directly paid using the bank card at the student center. There used to be a 5% discount for paying the full tuition fee, but it was discontinued starting from 2019.

To make a payment through bank transfer directly to the University of Warwick's bank account, it is crucial to provide the following information to the university: your student name and student ID. When making the payment at the bank, you need to include these details as a remark in the remittance form. Write your full name in English as it appears on your passport and include your student ID from the offer letter or CAS. This ensures that the payment is correctly allocated to your tuition fee account.

Ten Sheng Meow reminds you to not only remember to include your name and student ID when making the transfer but also carefully check the Sort Code, account number, IBAN number, and SWIFT code. Making a mistake in these details can be quite troublesome. It is recommended to pay directly using the card at the university. However, if you have made a transfer to the university's account through your online banking system for the first time, the banking system will save the school's information. The next time, you can simply select the saved account, and the exchange rate will be based on the bank's rate for that day.

Important Notes:

  1. Whether you are transferring funds through the bank counter,      online banking, or mobile banking, please ensure that you correctly fill      in the student's name in pinyin and student ID number in the remarks      section.

  2. When conducting the telegraphic transfer, the Chinese bank will      charge additional handling fees. Additionally, during the international      remittance process, the foreign bank may also charge a certain fee,      usually around £12-£20. This fee will be deducted from the amount sent by      the student. To ensure that the university receives the full amount, it is      recommended for students to include an extra £20 when making the transfer.

  3. After completing the telegraphic transfer, please scan the      clear and complete copy of the remittance application form and send it      to: chinaoffice.io@coventry.ac.uk,      with a copy to: tuition.io@coventry.ac.uk.
