How to exchange a Hong Kong driver's license for a UK driver's license?
In a previous article, it was mentioned that Hong Kong vehicle registration plates are similar to those in the UK.
If you hold a Hong Kong driver's license, you can drive in the UK for up to 12 months after your first entry. If you wish to continue driving beyond that period, you must exchange your Hong Kong driver's license for a UK driver's license. Hong Kong driver's licenses are considered from a "designated country or territory" by the UK, allowing you to apply for a UK driver's license within the first 5 years of becoming a UK resident.
To become a UK resident, you need to reside in the UK for at least 185 days in each calendar year (from January 1st to December 31st). Once you exchange your driver's license for a UK license, your Hong Kong driver's license becomes invalid. This means that even if you had a driving experience of 5 years or more in Hong Kong, your driving experience in the UK will be counted as starting from zero.
Note: As of now, the process of exchanging a Hong Kong driver's license for a UK driver's license does not require retaking any exams or undergoing any tests conducted by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). It is a direct exchange without the need for additional testing. However, there is an exchange fee of £43 for the driver's license (as of August 11, 2021).
So how do you exchange a Hong Kong driver's license for a UK driver's license in the UK?
First, you need to meet the following four criteria:
GB resident - You must be a resident of Great Britain (UK).
Car or motorcycle - The exchange process applies to those holding a Hong Kong driver's license for cars or motorcycles.
Which designated country or territory was your driver's license issued from?
