How to ride a motorcycle in the UK? How to get a motorcycle driving license in the UK? (Updated in September 2022)
Reminder: Many students have asked about buying a used motorcycle in the UK. Generally, it is advisable to buy a new motorcycle from a reputable dealership. New motorcycles often come with discounts. Personally, I don't know why, but I tend to prefer BMW motorcycles, although there are other cool options as well. However, there are also many used motorcycle dealerships in the UK, so it's important to be discerning. You can find many options through Google Maps or Facebook (renamed as Meta on October 29, 2021).
Motorcycles, in the UK, well, many people still enjoy riding them. Although I haven't seen many of my classmates riding motorcycles, to be precise, they are not very common in small villages. However, in slightly larger cities, they are more prevalent.
International students studying in the UK can also ride motorcycles but need to obtain a motorcycle driving license in the UK.
Since someone asked about it, I'll provide some information. Do you think it's easy for me to add "十升喵" (translator's note: a phrase used by the author) every time I write an article? It's tiring, but some unfamiliar friends really enjoy my articles, so they directly copy and paste them to share. That's why I type in my own words, as many people don't know who I am, and it can be awkward. What if someone becomes interested in me and wants to offer me a mind-boggling fortune? Of course, if I didn't write well, what if someone wants to criticize me?
Firstly,
If you held a motorcycle or moped license before January 19, 2013, there are different regulations. For those after this date, if you want to ride on public roads, you need to first obtain a Provisional Licence, then complete the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and obtain a CBT certificate. After obtaining the CBT, you must pass both the theory and practical motorcycle tests within two years. If you fail, you will need to retake the CBT.
Next,
Motorcycles are categorized into different types, similar to motorcycle driving licenses in other countries. In the UK, they are categorized as D, E, and F. The D license allows you to ride all types of motorcycles, including three-wheelers and two-wheelers. The E license allows you to ride all two-wheel motorcycles, and the F license is only for riding two-wheel electric bicycles (with engines of 50cc or less). Therefore, the motorcycle driving license in the UK also has different types. Depending on the type of motorcycle you want to ride, you need to obtain the corresponding type of motorcycle driving license. Generally, many people choose types A, A1, or A2. Refer to the chart below: The first row represents the license type, the second column indicates the corresponding motorcycle types you can ride, the third column specifies the requirements to obtain the license in the first column, and the last row shows the age restrictions.
If you want to ride a motor tricycle in the UK,
Temporary Category B driving licence and temporary Category A licence are only applicable for individuals with physical disabilities driving motor tricycles. The 3-wheel motorcycle driving test is only open to drivers with physical disabilities.
If you do not have a physical disability and want to ride a motor tricycle in the UK, you need to pass the CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) test and meet the following conditions in order to drive any power motor tricycle:
You are over 21 years old.
You have a valid full car driving licence.
You need to obtain an A1 motorcycle driving licence (specifically the one with a power output of up to 15 kW) and an A motorcycle driving licence.
Note: After obtaining the CBT, you must pass both the theory and practical motorcycle tests within two years. If you fail, you will need to retake the CBT.
If you have a European Union (EU) driving licence, before you can attend the CBT course, you must meet one of the following requirements:
Exchange your licence for a UK driving licence. [Link for exchanging foreign driving licence: https://www.gov.uk/exchange-foreign-driving-licence/y\]
Register your licence with the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) in Britain. If you register your EU driving licence, after passing the theory and practical tests, you must exchange it for a UK driving licence.
