What is an Airbag?
Today, I had the opportunity to experience a friend's newly purchased Porsche. It was fully equipped and had a cool color, clearly a car chosen by a young person. While waiting for the car, I noticed a large word written on the steering wheel: "airbag." I had never paid much attention to it before and didn't know what it meant in the context of a car. I only knew about airbags on airplanes and their purpose, but I was unaware of their function in cars.
Curious, I asked my friend to explain it to me. He informed me that the "airbag" in a car refers to the automotive safety airbag. It rapidly inflates and opens in the event of an accident to provide protection. It is an auxiliary safety device that is commonly installed in most vehicles. However, some airbags may not have the SRS (Supplement Restraint System) logo, but it doesn't affect their functionality.
In addition to being called an "airbag," the formal name for the automotive safety airbag system is Supplement Restraint System (SRS). Therefore, some cars have buttons labeled SRS, while others may have "SRS airbag" printed on them. This indicates that the primary safety restraint system is the seatbelt, and the SRS is a secondary supplementary passive safety system. Both systems need to work together.
Furthermore, there are different types of airbags in cars, corresponding to the numbers shown in the diagram below:
Front airbags:
Driver airbag/front passenger airbag (DA)
Knee airbags
Side and curtain shield airbags:
Side airbags/Front Side Airbags
Side airbags/Rear Side Airbags
Curtain shield airbags
Curtain airbags
Torso airbags/Side torso airbags or Side-impact airbags"
Note: The translations of specific airbag types are provided based on the context, but they may vary depending on the manufacturer and model of the vehicle.
