Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency

The main activities include conducting driving tests, approving individuals as driving instructors and MOT testers, carrying out tests to ensure the safe operation of trucks and buses, conducting roadside checks of drivers and vehicles, and monitoring vehicle recalls. There are approximately 4,600 employees across the UK, including driving test examiners, vehicle standard assessors, driving test managers, traffic examiners, customer service agents, registration and licensing officers, digital services and technology experts, and business service specialists (such as communication, finance, and human resources personnel).

The DVSA is responsible for:

 

Conducting theory and practical tests for individuals who want to drive cars, motorcycles, trucks, buses, coaches, and specialized vehicles.

 

Approving individuals as driving instructors and motorcycle trainers and ensuring they provide high-quality training.

 

Approving individuals as MOT testers, approving their testing centers, and conducting tests on trucks, buses, and coaches themselves.

 

Conducting roadside checks of commercial drivers to ensure compliance with safety regulations and promote safe vehicle operation.

 

Monitoring vehicle, component, and accessory recalls to ensure manufacturers address issues promptly.

 

Approving training courses offered by qualified drivers, such as Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) courses for truck, bus, and coach drivers, as well as drink-driving rehabilitation courses.

 

Supporting the issuing and supervision of licenses by the Traffic Commissioners for companies operating trucks, buses, and coaches in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and registering local bus services.
