How to Apply for a UK National Insurance Number (NIN)?
If you intend to work in the UK, whether it's part-time, internship, full-time, or volunteer work, you need to apply for a National Insurance Number (NIN or NI) within 6 weeks. The NIN is part of the UK's welfare system and is used for tax purposes. These taxes contribute to various welfare benefits, including maternity allowances, unemployment benefits, and assistance for individuals unable to work or retired.
If you are a British citizen, the UK government automatically sends you a NIN after you turn 16. However, if you are a non-British citizen, you need to apply for it. Students on a visa and dependents on a visa (specific cases vary) are eligible to apply for a NIN. Generally, short-term visas and individuals under 19 years old do not apply for a NIN. If your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) already has a NIN, you do not need to apply again.
How to apply:
Prepare your BRP, passport, digital photo, and other necessary documents in advance.
Open the official application link [https://www.gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number\], click the application button, and fill in the required information in the provided order. (Note: The website does not save your data, and you should not spend too much time on a single page, as it may refresh or start over. Carefully fill in the information and double-check).
After completing and submitting the application, you will receive an email with your application reference number. The email will inform you if further identification proof is required. Once your identity is verified, it takes approximately 8 weeks to receive your NIN.
Reminder: If you haven't received your NIN after 8 weeks, you should contact the official authorities. Remember to have your passport, BRP, and the reference number from the email you received when contacting them in advance.
