Moodle和Canvas系统¶
It's important to know that Moodle crashes are quite common in foreign universities, especially during peak periods like deadlines. However, most schools are able to restore the system within a few hours or days. Since the first encounter with a Moodle crash, Ten Sheng Miao has been submitting papers and assignments early every time.
For example, the Moodle system at the University of Nottingham in the UK crashed and took a whole week to be fixed!!!
Besides Moodle's frequent crashes, Canvas can also be frustrating.
So, what is Moodle? What is Canvas?
Moodle and Canvas are the two most commonly used learning management systems in foreign universities, available through websites and apps. Both platforms serve as communication and learning platforms for teachers and students. Students can access various learning materials on these platforms, such as course slides, recommended readings, supplementary materials uploaded by teachers, assignment tasks, online discussions between students and teachers, grade viewing, specific schedules for exams, papers, and presentations, submission of papers, PowerPoint presentations, and assignments, school and teacher notifications, online learning videos, audio content, and online assignments, among other learning resources. In short, there is a wide range of content available.
In summary, students must learn how to use Moodle and Canvas. However, it's important to note that each school may choose different systems. In addition to Moodle and Canvas, many universities have developed their own campus systems to manage student learning progress, personal information, tuition scholarships, printing student certificates, accessing graduation information, changing majors, selecting elective courses, participating in school activities, and providing instructions on using campus facilities, among other functions.
Ten Sheng Miao would like to remind everyone:
Remember to log in to your Moodle and Canvas accounts regularly, especially when you have free time. Alternatively, check your email daily because teachers may upload learning tasks, course materials, or notify you about changes in classrooms, exam deadlines, and more. Ten Sheng Miao has set up email notifications for these purposes.
When submitting papers, PowerPoint presentations, or other assignments, avoid waiting until the last day of the deadline. System crashes often occur during peak periods. Ten Sheng Miao experienced a system crash once while submitting a paper, and it was quite nerve-wracking. Fortunately, the system was restored after a few hours, and the paper was promptly submitted. Since then, Ten Sheng Miao has always submitted assignments in advance.
Download all the current course materials and supplementary learning resources in advance during regular periods. The school usually uploads them before registration. Even the course schedules are planned in advance, including holiday periods such as Christmas. Ten Sheng Miao not only downloads the course materials early but also takes screenshots of the schedule. This way, even if unable to log in, Ten Sheng Miao can still refer to the screenshot.
If you encounter a system crash while submitting an assignment, wait for one or two hours before resubmitting. If it's the last day of the deadline, contact your school's teachers and IT department. Usually, the school will promptly restore the system or extend the submission deadline. During the system maintenance period, you will receive apology emails from the school and updates on the progress. Make sure to check these emails.
As shown in the image below, the University of Nottingham has extended the original deadline by one week. Ten Sheng Miao reminds everyone to consider submitting their work in advance.
:
Ten Sheng Miao specifically reminds you to submit assignments at different times to minimize risks. In some schools, if there are too many people submitting assignments simultaneously, it may cause the system to freeze during the submission process. Although it may appear that your paper has been successfully submitted, you may not receive any confirmation feedback from the system. In such cases, even though the interface shows that the assignment has been submitted and you are unable to submit it again, you need to wait for some time and refresh the page to resubmit. Keep doing this until you receive a confirmation of successful submission. If you fail to do so due to this issue, the school will consider it your problem rather than a system issue, and you may fail that particular assignment. If, after waiting and refreshing the page, you still cannot submit the assignment because the first submission is occupying the space, contact your teacher and the IT department immediately, as this is a specific issue with your interface.
Do not assume that the system will crash every time and procrastinate writing your papers or completing other assignments, thinking you can take advantage of the situation. There is a possibility that the system will be quickly repaired or it may not crash at all, but experience a temporary lag of a few minutes or hours. In such cases, if you have delayed submitting your work, it could create a difficult situation for you.
