挂科怎么办

What to do if you fail in the UK? What should you do if you fail a language course, undergraduate course, master's course, or foundation course?

Failing a Language Course:

When studying a language course in the UK, the specific actions to take after failing can vary depending on whether the language program is provided directly by the university or outsourced to another institution. Therefore, it is important to inquire about the specific procedures from the university before starting the language course.

Generally, there are several options for dealing with a failed language course during your studies in the UK:

  1. Resit the exam: Some universities may offer an opportunity to retake      the exam for the language course.

  2. Repeat the course: In some cases, you may need to retake the      entire language course, attending classes and completing assignments      again.

  3. Combine language study with regular courses: In certain      situations, you may be allowed to continue with your regular academic      courses while simultaneously undertaking additional language classes to      improve your language skills.

  4. Request a review: If you believe there was an error in the      grading or assessment process, you can request a review or appeal the      decision.

  5. Take the IELTS test: If you fail a language course, you may      consider taking the IELTS (International English Language Testing System)      exam to demonstrate your language proficiency.

  6. Transfer to another institution: In some cases, if you are      unable to meet the language requirements of your current institution, you      may explore the option of transferring to another university or      institution with different language requirements.

Failing Undergraduate, Master's, or Foundation Courses:

If you fail an undergraduate, master's, or foundation course in the UK, the specific steps to take may vary depending on the university's policies and regulations. It is important to consult with your academic advisor or the university's student support services for guidance. Generally, the options available to you may include:

  1. Resit exams or coursework: Some universities provide an      opportunity to retake failed exams or resubmit coursework to improve your      grades.

  2. Repeat the module or the entire course: If you fail a module or      an entire course, you may be required to repeat it in order to fulfill the      academic requirements.

  3. Seek academic support: Universities often offer academic      support services, such as tutoring or study skills workshops, to help      students improve their performance.

  4. Consult with academic advisors: It is advisable to discuss your      situation with your academic advisor for personalized guidance on the      steps to take after failing a course.

These actions mentioned above are general options, and the specific procedures and policies may vary among universities in the UK. It is essential to reach out to your institution for accurate and detailed information regarding the appropriate steps to take after failing a course.

These three methods, according to Ten Sheng Miao, are considered the best if you really fail a course. The third and fifth methods are preferred because if you don't pass the first method of retaking the exam, you would have to repeat the course, return to your home country, or transfer to another school, among other options. The second method is to repeat the course, but apart from the time and language fees involved, there is a possibility of not passing the second attempt at the language test. Moreover, there is a risk that the language visa application may not be approved. The fourth method is the process of review, but the likelihood of this happening is very low. The majority of schools do not accept appeals for language scores, although there are a few British universities that do accept appeals. Therefore, it is advisable to inquire with the school in advance. If the school accepts appeals, you can argue your case. The sixth method is transferring to another school. This requires advance application and the receiving school must be willing to accept your situation and provide you with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) within the validity of your language visa. For example, I had two friends who originally wanted to pursue undergraduate studies at our school but failed the language test. Coincidentally, starting from that year, there was no longer an opportunity for a retake. One of them chose a university with lower ranking than our school, while the other chose to return to their home country. The third method is adopted by some British universities, especially when the number of students admitted does not meet the target or when you have special circumstances. The fifth method is to take the IELTS test while studying the language course. For example, one of my classmates studied the language course while simultaneously taking the IELTS test. In the end, she did not pass the language course exam, but she scored 6.5 in the IELTS, which allowed her to successfully enroll.

Failing a Foundation Course:

This includes both undergraduate and master's foundation courses. Foundation courses are generally offered through collaborations between educational institutions and schools. Some universities offer their own foundation courses. The pass rate for foundation courses varies depending on the circumstances. If you achieve high scores in the foundation course and the university recognizes it, you can apply to highly-ranked universities, including the G5 universities.

What to do if you fail a foundation course?

  1. Resit the exam.

  2. Repeat the course.

  3. Take an internal assessment.

  4. Take the IELTS exam.

  5. Transfer to another institution.

First method is resitting the exam. Most foundation course programs allow for resitting exams. Remember to inquire with the school before starting the course.

Second method is repeating the course.

Third method is taking an internal assessment. For instance, if you fail the foundation course but still want to enroll in an undergraduate program in the UK, and your language proficiency is not sufficient, you can apply for an International Year One program. However, the entry requirements for International Year One programs typically require passing the language assessment. In this case, you would need to take an internal assessment. If you do not pass the assessment, you would still need to continue with language studies.

Fourth method is taking the IELTS exam. Yes, you read it right. Scoring well on the IELTS exam is highly recommended. If you have spare time in the UK, it is suggested to take the IELTS exam because it is considered advantageous to take it while in the UK.

Fifth method is transferring to another institution. Transferring means using your foundation course grades to apply to other schools that accept your grades.

Failing undergraduate and postgraduate courses

Generally, when it comes to failing undergraduate or postgraduate courses, there are several situations:

  1. Failing a dissertation or thesis.

  2. Failing an exam.

  3. Failing a presentation.

  4. Failing a specific assessment required by the school (e.g., a      mock interview).

So, what should you do in these four situations?

  1. Failing a dissertation or thesis: If your dissertation or      thesis does not pass, usually you will have an opportunity to rewrite it.      If the rewrite is also unsuccessful, you may need to retake the course.      However, some schools have a one-time pass requirement, and if you fail,      you will have to repeat the entire module. Therefore, it's important to      inquire with your subject-specific professor before starting the course      because requirements may vary for each subject in each program.

  2. Failing an exam: Similar to failing a dissertation, failing an      exam often grants you a chance for a resit. If you fail the resit, you      will need to retake the course. However, this also depends on the specific      subject and program requirements, so it's essential to clarify this in      advance.

  3. Failing a presentation: Similar to the previous two cases, if      you fail a presentation, there is usually no opportunity for a second      attempt. However, presentations generally carry a relatively small      weightage in the overall assessment. Therefore, you can compensate for a      failed presentation by performing well in other parts of the course. For      example, if the presentation only accounts for 20% of the total grade and      you score high enough in the exam to meet the passing threshold, you can      still pass the course.

  4. Failing a specific assessment required by the school: In cases      where a particular assessment, such as a mock interview, is required by      the school and you fail it, there may not be an opportunity for a second      attempt. However, the impact on graduation is usually minimal, and your      professor will provide guidance on what to do next, such as demonstrating      satisfactory performance in regular class activities.

A reminder from Ten Sheng Miao: First, regarding exams in the UK, regardless of the type, it is crucial not to be absent. If you miss an exam, you may lose the chance for a resit or rewrite. This means that even if you anticipate failing, you must still attend the exam unless there are exceptional circumstances (e.g., illness or unforeseen events). Otherwise, the school may cancel your opportunity for a makeup exam. Second, in general, UK universities allow students to request a review or appeal for both undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations and exams. This means you still have one opportunity to argue your case and potentially change the result to a pass.
